Probably no one will look at this, but I am amazed at this song! I've heard it many times but forgot about it. It directly addresses some things I was thinking about near the beginning of this year. ^_^

^ Good song. It reminds me of Ravi Zacharaias's book The Grand Weaver.

Okay Fortunately my library has it. I'll check it out next time I'm there.

I'm still uncertain how I feel about the new MGMT album. I love the production and experimental aspect of it but unfortunately the songs are somewhat forgettable and buried beneath the noise.

If this is any indication of what the new Switchfoot album will sound like then I think it may end up being one of their best.

I'm still really addicted to this record. It's dark and twisted and ethereal but in a really interesting way. I love an album that creates its own atmosphere and sticks with a theme. It's not everyone's cup of tea but for those looking for something challenging and more "out there" the Lips always deliver.

As I mentioned to Dandelions, my musical tastes are quite varied. Things like genre and era aren't as important as whether a song speaks to me in some way. These are just a few of my favorites. I plan to post more in the future.
Let's start with Glass Hammer, a Christian progressive rock band. Their lead singer, Jon Davison, also doubles as the new lead singer for Yes. Unfortunately, Jon Anderson had to stop touring with Yes due to health concerns. I'm also a fan of Yes, and I think the new Jon does a surprisingly good job of filling his shoes while remaining true to his own style. That being said, I think his best work is with this group.
While songs like Losing my Religion and Shiny Happy People received a lot of attention and heavy airplay, however, Texarkana was largely overlooked. That's too bad, because this is my favorite track by REM.
Ever since my high school wind ensemble perfomed Mars, I've been a fan of The Planets. Composed by Gustav Holst nearly 100 years ago, the powerful melodies and instrumentation are truly inspirational.
Not much to say about this one except that I like it. Simple and catchy pop songs have always appealed to me.
Medeski Martin and Wood are a little out out there, and I like that about them. Their compositions are rarely static or stale. Largely due to their improvisational style, it's always moving somewhere. Forward, out, up, down... just when you they seem settled and predictable, they go somewhere else with it. Their work stands up well to repeated listens, as my ear often finds something new that I hadn't noticed before. That being said, their music may not be accessible to everyone. Their audience is definitely a niche market, but a few of their recordings, such as Professor Nohair, may also appeal to casual listeners unfamiliar with the group.
Although I don't typically listen to metal, I'll admit to liking a Finnish band called Wintersun. The vocals are *not* in a style that I typically find listenable, but the music is otherwise compelling enough for me to overlook that detail. Although the singing is somewhat harsh at times, the lyrical themes are largely sci-fi/fantasy, rather than violent or morbid.
Much of what I listen to is well before my time. For instance, A World of Our Own, by the Australian folk band, The Seekers. Compared to the previous song, the difference may seem almost jarring, but what really catches my attention are the melodies, harmonies, integrity, and feel of the music itself.
Guided by Voices has something of a cult following, but I didn't discover them until 2005 or so. They were an indie band out of Dayton, Ohio. Their primary songwriter, Robert Pollard, is a former grade school teacher and highly prolific. According to Wikipedia, he's written over 1600 songs.
I had the opportunity to hear Carolyn Arends at a church concert several years ago. She was performing along with another artist whose name escapes me at the moment, but I walked away impressed. This song is inspiring, and reminds me of a friend who was trying to make it as a writer at the time. I stumbled across one of her CDs the other day, and have basically rediscovered her music. It's neat when that happens.

One of my favorite bands has released some new songs this year. I wasn't sure if I should post this in this thread or the song that reflects mood.. but since this is several songs I will post it here. ^_^ https://soundcloud.com/officialsuperchick
I believe they have 5 new songs this year. And the band is breaking up or broke up.
I own all their cds except their remix cds. I might buy this new cd or maybe just the 5 new songs online.

Eminem has a new album coming out here in a few days. He is my guilty pleasure when it comes to music. I don't like rap at all, but his music and lyrics really speak to me. He grew up through a lot of junk and used his pain and made something of it. And he's incredibly talented at what he does. I know most people here probably don't think much of him and that's okay.
This most recent song he released really speaks to what I'm going through right now. And it's really catchy.

The new Arcade Fire album is good but I'm not blown away like I was hoping I would be. It's certainly varied and I love the textures and atmosphere, not to mention the LCD Soundsystem-esque sound, but overall it's not as memorable or touching as some of their previous work. There are a few songs that are pretty great, though. Like this one!
