| Does anyone here ever fast, or take a break from something like watching movies, Facebook, eating certain foods, eating all foods, etc? So that you can spend that time focused more on God. What do you do? And how often?
I do it sometimes where I will take a break from something that I feel I've been spending too much of my time on and might be distracting me from spending time with God or doing things I need to do. But I think I should do it more often. | |

| I have fasted from food, a couple times when I really felt I needed guidance. Let's see, what else... oh, I used to watch Family Guy all the time, partially because it's funny and partially because the reruns were on constantly. Then I got a really strong sense that God wanted me to stop watching Family Guy. So I did. I haven't watched it in 3 years, and I don't plan on it In fact, for at least a year, I didn't watch any TV except football. It felt good. | |

| I have fasted from food in the past and I want to make that a part of regular spiritual discipline in my life. Isaiah 58 is a great passage on fasting. I believe any fasting should go hand in hand with prayer otherwise it's just starvation. | |

| I sometimes fast when I am trying to get closer to God or understand what His will is. I've totally cut out television from my life for some years now, but I think it has helped keep me more focused with some things in life. I have been thinking about taking another break from the internet for a while; I notice that I get a lot more accomplished around home when I keep off of the internet, so this summer I might take some time away from it while on break from school to try forming better habits. I used to do fasts (for about a week) where I did not eat most foods except for some raw fruits, veggies and juices, but I did that for health reasons. I should do one again, I think it might help me get some energy back. Anyway, I think that there are a lot of good reasons to abstain from various things in life to help us get back on track; we as humans tend to develop habits and become accustomed in a certain every day routine, or things we find comfort or pleasure in we can sometimes go to more than we should, which can become vices or hindrances in our life and growth, so sometimes changing things up a bit for good reasons can keep our spiritual and physical life in optimal health. | |
